ABOUT

To excel as a musician at any level, it is important to study with a qualified teacher (and practice!). The sooner this process begins, the straighter the trajectory toward mastering an instrument.

David Terán Otey teaches and plays - trumpet, cornet, bugle, french horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, and tuba.

His students are active in their school music programs and are encouraged to audition for and perform with other music ensembles in their communities. These ensembles include the Peninsula Youth Orchestra program, Navy-sponsored Band of the West, Stanford Jazz, and SF Jazz programs for youth. Mr. Otey’s students have won chairs in regional honors band as well as All-State ensembles.

In addition to studio teaching, David has coached the many brass players of Borel Middle School and Aragon H.S. in San Mateo as well as helping out with the programs of Terra Linda and Central middle schools in San Carlos. He is honored to be the Brass Specialist with the 3 prep orchestras of the Peninsula Youth Orchestra program.

David’s lessons are comfortable, safe, and fun, promoting the enjoyment of learning and making music.

David places an emphasis on fundamentals (building embouchure, breathing, posture, musical interpretation, sight-reading and theory). This approach paves the way for a student to become a well-rounded musician and a solid performer regardless of the styles of music pursued.

Students’ ages range from as young as 7 years old (cornet is a good starter instrument) through high school.

Lessons are typically 30 minutes for younger players while high schoolers might prefer lessons 45 minutes to an hour.

While David coaches brass players on the Peninsula (San Carlos, Belmont, and San Mateo), he also teaches at his studio at Petaluma Hill Farm , an easy reach from Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Cotati, and Santa Rosa.
